Re: Canon 1Ds Mark III or Mamiya DL28?

Phase One now has the P40+ (40MP). It has a Dalsa sensor and can reach 1.8 fps w/ the Sensor + enabled. Sensor + now allows you to reach 3200 ASA also. To read more about the P40+ go to:

Capture Integration - Your Phase One, Canon, Apple, Eizo, Cambo Dealer

Please feel free to contact me if you would like a demo of the P40+ or P65+.

Re: Canon 1Ds Mark III or Mamiya DL28?

I'm curious why nobody bought up that an MF system is going to offer more usable aperture range. I love my 1Ds3 but being restricted to f8 sucks. The limits of 35mm chips and lenses has definitely been reached.

As for the features in 35mm bodies, that may or may not even matter depending on how and what you shoot. For me, I need manual shutter speed, aperture and mirror up. Auto focus is nice but anything else is mostly seldom-used gravy.

Re: Canon 1Ds Mark III or Mamiya DL28?

I truly believe that DSLRs have reached the ceiling as far as what the lenses can resolve. The new sensors that are being introduced are getting so large that Canon, Nikon and the other players will have to redesign lenses at some point in time to keep up with 21MP+ chips.

The medium format technical cameras are utilizing new APO lenses similar to that on 4x5 cameras. Keep an eye on some of the new releases from Schneider and Rodenstock as well as the MF manufactures that are redesigning their lenses also.

Re: Canon 1Ds Mark III or Mamiya DL28?

Until the MF manufactures and the photography world comes to their senses and realizes that the only difference between the electronics cameras is in the sensor and creates an economy of scale as Canon and Nikon have, MF will remain a niche item. Looking at the components in the 1DSM3 I would hazzard an estimate of less than $100 of electronic components. The 1DSM3 board could be dropped into any MF or LF back and do the same job. Even at that the 1DSM3 board has room for a lot of improvement at very little cost. I.E. one example is High quality high speed A/D converters instead of the under $1.00 ones used today. Take a look at private avaition electronics equipment. Even at the very small scale of private avaition (approximately 20,000 units a year) you can purchase a very sophisticated navigation receiver for under $2000.00 that is head and shoulders above anything and any technology you will find in any Canon OR MF camera. Even the technology in cameras other than the component size is 50 years old. The MF manufacturers should get out of their shell and maybe hire an engineer from the aerospace world to teach them how to think in new ways.

Re: Canon 1Ds Mark III or Mamiya DL28?

I find myself already too limited as to processing power and digital storage for what I shoot. If I went to larger chips, I'd need a quantum leap in computer capability.

This must all occur within reasonable time lengths for us to make use of any increase in megapixels. I think we're bumping up into a ceiling on several fronts.

Re: Canon 1Ds Mark III or Mamiya DL28?

I just ordered the parts for an I7 system with 12 GB. We will see how much that helps. Glad that hard drive space is inexpensive now days. I use my old P4 system for backup wih a couple of 1.5 TB drives.

Paul,

In recent months because of the volatile economy and strong competition the prices on MF digital backs and cameras has met and even dropped below what 35mm DSLRs. Don't forget that it's not only the hardware that the manufactures have to contend with it's also software. Software can be daunting task.
