I wouldn't argue that, (some would) but I would argue that at the current time the Apple model is a lot friendlier to users than the MS model. This appears to be because they don't derive all of their income from software, and their software can generally only be loaded on their hardware, so piracy is not something that consumes their waking hours. As a result, there is no WGA or painful calls to Apple Support because you dared re-install your OS.

I'm happy to pay the small premium involved to enjoy that kind of freedom. I do all common OS's, and I intensely dislike being spoken to by MS support as if I have stolen something from them.

Mike.

Mike.
That is another point for Apple. Their software upgrades are relatively inexpensive. Snow Leopard was $29. and on the honor system as there is no software registration key. The "upgrade" is a full version which can be installed on any intel based Apple computer.

In comparison. I paid $300. for the full version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

But think of the countless hours of fun you had trying to get it to work.

It's all a wretched conspiracy to switch everyone to Apple. Then, we'd only have Nikon/Canon to fight over. The world would be so dull.

But wait ..... here comes W7 to the rescue! OMG.

Oh yes. Please enjoy paying through the nose to buy mostly the same software you bought the last time, and the time before that, and the time before that... I know I do.

They just love changing the curtains in Seattle to make the windows look new

Wow, that says that Apple is giving in to the domination of the planet by the gamma 2.2 PCs.
Here’s an explanation of why the Mac has traditionally used a gamma of 1.8.

From John's article,

Quote:
Your whole display will now be closer to what Windows users see*.
As opposed to what will print on a printing press. Ah, well, we have managed color for that now.

Frankly, all kidding aside, I think this is a good move in the long term. The plain and simple fact is that web content is viewed by FAR more Windows users, and since Macs are still highly regarded in content creation it just seems like an ongoing hassle people don't need. And we know there's a fat chance a lot more apps will become color-managed anytime soon!

Anecdote: Just two nights ago I was working with my chief software engineer and was trying to show him how one part of a window wasn't being updated to white but was remaining the light gray of the background of the dialog. He didn't understand what I was saying because he couldn't see the difference in the remote view of my Windows desktop he was seeing on his Mac. In the future, when he moves up to Snow Leopard that should longer be a problem.

Of course, by then I'll be on Windows 7 with its freshly washed out colors...

In the near term I'm SURE that there will be a whole host of difficulties for Mac users as programs that just *know* Mac is gamma 1.8 will present new problems. Sigh; progress is painful sometimes.

Re: Mac OS X Snow Leopard

So here's the question.

Should I change my monitor calibration settings using the pantone Eye-one display 2, to match the factory gamma 2.2 or leave it at 1.8?
