computer problems

typing is really slow on my mac laptop. like a super fast typist on a 90s era computer, i type a few words and wait a second or two for them to appear.

i have this problem only in the mail program, word or typing on this blog (safari) is fine. its a mac G4 powerbook, OS 10.5.5, 1.5Gb ram, 60GB HD. and software updates are up to date.

any ideas...?

thanks

Re: computer problems

Michael,

There are a number of possible causes for what you're experiencing, and you're not the only one having that problem.

Some possible causes, in no particular order:
  • hardware problem that is only currently manifesting in this manner
  • bad third party driver that may be unrelated to Mail but still affecting it
  • unfortunate email mailbox configuration that triggers bugginess in Mail (might be worth trying the "rebuild mailbox" option in Mail)
  • overtaxed resources from too many loaded apps (determine out if you're in virtual memory hell while Mail is running)
  • problematic input manager plugin

This is a situation where I'd normally recommend you make a Genius Bar appointment, but I'm not sure there are any Apple Stores near you. There are actually all sorts of things you can do yourself to rule out some of the above possibilities, but I'm not going to write a book about it, here.

Mail works fine when it works, but when it doesn't work, it can drive people straight out of their minds. Unfortunately, I've never found a better email client on any platform. They all have their drawbacks.

Martin

Never made any such claim, and I could make a pretty heftly list of complaints. I can assure you that all the unpleasant experiences I've accumulated on Macs over the last 5-6 years have never for one fraction of a second led me to consider returning to the Windows hell I left behind.

Re: computer problems

i dont have that mac store but i have other great ones.

anyways solved it. cleared out old emails, not that many really, only about 160-180 in each trash and sent folder. must of had a month of large attachments.

in the activity monitor, i saw mail was using 83MB of ram while PS CS2 was only using 70MB.

cleared out old messages and it seems to be good now.

thanks.
