Full Screen on MacBook

I’m sure this has been discussed someplace before but what I have found is not encouraging.

I purchased a small notebook for three reasons: (1) to off-load images from CF cards while on the road and (2) so I could really see what I had before heading home and (3) so clients could really see what I had shot while on location.

I purchased the 13-inch MacBook over other options because (1) it had an LED backlit display (2) it has a very long up-time on batteries (3) it is very small and (4) I liked the design.

I had no trouble getting it setup, connected to my LAN and my Vista PC (well, some trouble there but only because I could not find the necessary information right away) and shooting tethered to a 1Ds III via the Canon utilities and DPP.

That was when I discovered you cannot make DPP or ZoomBrowser full screen on the Mac …apparently this is a Mac thing, you are not supposed to let one app take over the entire screen.

The problem is when I’m at a client I want the images to be as big as possible, I want them full screen.

I have noticed that Flash galleries with full screen options work as expected so it full screen in the PC sense is possible on the Mac.

So, do I have to use Bootcamp and install Vista on the MacBook to get full screen or is there another way?

Re: Full Screen on MacBook

By "full screen" do you mean without a menu bar? I don't use DPP or Breezebrowser so I'm not familiar with how they work but there are certain other Mac apps that work that way... mostly various video or slide show apps that can take over the full screen. Even Bridge or Photoshop can do that in some modes. So I think its an application thing rather than a Mac thing. If the app you're using won't do that, you can at least maximize screen space by turning on Dock hiding. That gets you a little more space. Your application window can then run full screen minus the small menu bar at the top of the screen.

The window size buttons are on the left in OSX. THe green button maximizes the application.

Re: Full Screen on MacBook

Image Browser (The Mac equivalent of Zoom Browser), Photoshop, Aperture and iPhoto all have true fullscreen modes with no menu bar on OSX (DPP does not).

Re: Full Screen on MacBook

To respond…

By ‘Full Screen’ I mean that the window takes over the entire screen, including the Dashboard at the bottom (talk about a lot of wasted real estate when it is not needed!).

The menu bar at the top of the screen is fine as you need some way to interact with the applications when they run full screen.

I do not have any of the Adobe products installed on the MacBook …those are all on my desktop PC.

I found the Window Size buttons just fine but that was the problem that prompted my first post: The ‘full screen’ button (green dot) is not a ‘full screen’ button …it only resizes the window to be ‘as big as needed’ according Apple, but not according to me!

I rechecked the Canon Image Browser and DPP. They both do the same thing when the green button is clicked: They expand to the full width of the screen but only expand to a height that fills the space between the menu bar at the top and the Dashboard, the Dashboard remains!

As a result there is a lot of real estate that could be used for a larger view of the photographs at the bottom of the screen that is inaccessible due to the Dashboard.

Does anyone have any experience running Vista (32/64) via Bootcamp? I’m thinking that is the only way to get the use of the Dashboard area at the bottom of the screen for displaying images.

Thanks for the responses!

Re: Full Screen on MacBook

Mark,

The 'thing at the bottom' is called the Dock. Dashboard is the overlay window with utility apps that appears when you hit the F4 key.

Now to fix your main problem:

Under the Apple menu, you will find an item for 'Dock...'

In it, you will see 'Turn Hiding On'

Now when you click the maximise button, it should take all the available real estate including the space used for the Dock previously. If it doesn't, you should be able to drag the bottom of the window from the bottom right corner...

I can't test this sorry, because I don't have the Apps you are using.

That will hopefully eliminate at least one of your gripes

Michael

Re: Full Screen on MacBook

When you double click on any image using Image Browser, it opens up the image preview window. Along the bottom of this preview window is a row of control icons, one of which is fullscreen mode. This will present your image fullscreen without any menus. My MacBook Pro does dual boot with Vista 64 also for those programs that do not have Mac equivalents. I think a little more time familiarizing with OSX will alleviate your fears and apprehensions. If you live near an Apple store, they offer free seminars and one on one training for a nominal fee.
