Looks very nice!

Please pardon my dumb question... Are these new LED displays making red, green, and blue light from LEDs directly, or making white light from LEDs and filtering them through LCDs?

At this price point, I'm assuming it is white LED backlit like the MacBook and MacBook Pro displays. Unfortunately it also looks like it is covered with a sheet of glossy glass like the iMac series.

It is only compatible with Apple products containing a mini display port as it lacks a traditional DVI or VGA connector.

LED monitors are environmentally friendly as they contain no mercury, arsenic or lead and use less energy.

LED backlighting provides more even illumination compared to the traditional cold cathode fluorescent tube backlighting.

The largest benefit is that LED illumination provides consistent color temperature that does not degrade over time like CCF backlighting. The white LED backlights in Apple products are a good example.

For professional models that use individual RGB LED backlights like the HP DreamColor, Lacie 700 series and the Samsung XL line, the color gamut is wider and more accurate than any model ever made. This is due to the ability to calibrate each individual RGB LED and retain this information in the monitors LUT in addition to profiling the video card output.

Re: New LED 24" Apple Cinema Display

Ever seen the white light from an LED flashlight? I have one with a Luxeon LED... Very white, very bright. My understanding is that these are actually hyper-intense blue LEDs that cause a phosphor to fluoresce yellowish, the result mixing together to make a very white light.

Hard to imagine blue LEDs were a fantasy just a few decades ago, and LEDs didn't even exist at all before the 1960s.

Re: New LED 24" Apple Cinema Display

Saw one of the new 24" LED-backed displays this morning at my neighborhood Apple store. Nice piece of equipment. Makes the old Cinema Displays look clunky. Directionality much better (minimized) than the new laptops, which are so highly directional that only a perfectly centered and perpendicular pair of eyes gets the correct picture. Obviously, it remains to be seen how the new display will profile. I recall Andrew Rodney explained elsewhere that a spectrophotometer is needed, not a colorimeter (until colorimeters are updated to correctly interpret the results produced by the LED spectrum).
