Re: New MacBooks October 14th

What's amazing, regarding that Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, is the (very) occasional "it works perfectly for me" review.

Sigh, I suppose the market pressures are so great that an Engineering organization can't possibly cover all the bases, because if they did the product would be obsolete.

On the other hand, someone needs to remind them that a rock solid product, even if it's not absolutely bleeding edge WILL gather a following. There really ARE people out there who care if things work right.

But, as long as Apple keeps paying Justin Long to do Mac vs. PC ads, I suppose the Mac will be easier to use than the PC.

Re: New MacBooks October 14th

I'm not sure why Apple felt that now was the time to commit to a new video interface standard. Actually, considering they committed before it was a standard, perhaps it was a move to tip the scales? On the other hand, so far Apple has only deployed DisplayPort on their laptops, the overwhelming majority of which will never in their entire life-spans ever be connected to an external display. (No that won't help any of the exceptions feel any better.) We'll probably see the same thing happen in a near-term update to the iMac, but not the Mac Pro.

Regardless, it's easy to see some long-term advantages to DisplayPort. We're already bumping up against DVI’s limitations, and HDMI is shortsighted in so many ways.

Advantages, maybe, but as it is more complex (e.g., "Based on micro-packet protocol") we see some of the downsides of imperfection as people report they have to reboot their monitor several times a day.

The world is forced to become ever more tolerant of technology that doesn't work long enough to get anything useful done.

Well, I'm very happy they're offering the Matte/Anti-Glare Display on the New 17" MacBook Pro....Thank you, Apple!

It seems the problems people are having with dual link displays have led to a new official line: the dual link adapter Apple sells is only for use with the Apple 30" Cinema Display.
