Apple 30" Cinema display V Hp 30"

I have been a PC user for almost 20yrs and I finally decided to switch to Apple. I have just ordered a Mac Pro for my photographic hobby and I have difficulty making up my mind on which brand of LCD to purchase.

I am considering the apple 30" versus a new model HP 30" LCD. The HP is a much newer display and slightly cheaper here in Australia. Can anyone help me with my decision

Seriously look at the new NEC SpectraView II 3090. Its awesome (got mine Friday). Plus its a wide gamut display with superb calibration software (SpectraView II) that supports many Colorimeters or can be bundled with one. Its vastly superior to the Cinema display in everything but industrial design and has a far better warranty!

If I were to invest in a 30" display for photo accurate color, I would be looking at the NEC LCD3090WQX--BK. With widescreen format and wide color gamut covering 97.8% of Adobe RGB, it has a 12 bit LUT for internal calibration. It has a price of $2199 U.S.

NEC Display Solutions » MultiSync LCD3090WQXi-BK

I personally opted for two 20" widescreen displays for photo editing and graphic design. One monitor is an Apple Cinema Display and the other is the 20WSX Wacom Cintiq. This gives me 40" of screen real estate and the ability to edit directly on one screen while keeping tools and pallets on the other. I can also position the screens at an angle that makes viewing both more comfortable.

Thanks Andrew,

Now I have to review my options and add the NEC it. So what you are saying is I do not need gadgets like spyder Pro 3 to calibrate the monitor. Are you also saying this is about the best monitor on the market for its price range?

Wimp ;-)

I've got my MacPro driving the NEC 30" as a main display and an Apple 23" for the 2nd, all off the same card (I was amazed that card would drive em both). Talk about a lot of screen real estate! Its pretty awesome in Lightroom 2 now that it supports dual displays.

You want the NEC software ($99). It supports a number of existing Colorimeters like the Spyder 3 although I'm not sure I'd go out and buy that unit if I didn't already have one since you can get a bundle with the software and a new X-Rite EyeOne Display for not much more than just what the instrument normally costs (IOW, the bundle is a screaming deal).

Its the best display on the market in that size and at that price range that is an integrated calibrating system and a wide gamut display too. I've yet to understand what Eizo provides for a LOT more money.

Thanks Jerry for all the info. So what sort of a gamut does Apple or HP support?
