Conflict when backing up iPhoto Libary to external drive.

Conflict when backing up iPhoto Libary to external drive.
I'm running out of room on my G5 so I recently purchased an external hard drive and formatted it for for Mac. When I drag the iPhoto library folder to my hard drive it will transfer about 20 mb of files before it hangs up and stops transferring. Any thoughts on what might be hanging it up. I want to eventually transfer the images to Lightroom.
