This strikes me as pretty funny, Noel. First, what is a "purpose-built Windows machine?" And how would that "purpose-built Windows machine" be different than a new Mac (other than being hundreds of dollars less and nowhere near as pretty)?

Now that Apple has started using "Intel inside" (just like those Windows machines), it's no wonder the current Macs run Windows well.

Re: New to Mac

David,
I'm using Leopard and Lightroom 1.2 I wasn't aware that it doesn't work. The only strange thing I am finding is on Import, the dialog box sometimes hides itself behind or betwixt other running Apps windows. A bit of window hiding and it reveals itself again. Not something to deter an upgrade if any were thinking about it. BTW, no issues with CS3_PS, Br, ID or Ai that I have found.

I'm using a MacBook Pro which is performing beautifully on holiday in the UK (touch aluminium!!)

Re: New to Mac

I'm glad that it is working for you - be careful using it though as there have been issues with importing and I would have lost images if I hadn't noticed. Details are here:

Lightroom Journal: Lightroom 1.2 and Leopard

Re: New to Mac

Actually, I find Windows so non-intuitive and hear nothing but the opposite about Apple. Guess I'm tired of the struggle of someone who really never "learned" his way around this MS product. Thanks./ LT

There's also a bug where the finder will crash, i think, when using cover flow when certain conditions with regard to xml data exist. Google it if you want more info - I've forgotten where I read it.

Re: New to Mac

I was a PC/Adobe user but have changed to an iMac and Aperture with Photoshop to do the cloning etc but to a much lesser extent than pre-Aperture. Aperture works seamlessly with the other iLife applications such as iDVD so from import to creating a CD/DVD is all done on Apple software unlike on a PC where you are relying on the different software developers getting their act together to produce stable results, which is not always the case! I would go for a Mac, buy "The Missing Manual" to learn how a Mac works, get Aperture and buy/borrow "Aperture 1.5" from the Apple Pro Training Series by Orlando Luna & Ben Long and then get a copy of Photoshop (CS will do unless you really must have all the toys) and off you go!

Well, in all seriousness, Dell doesn't build computers that run OSX, so I'd say those are purpose-built Windows machines.

Not just a processor does a computer make. There are many other considerations.

There is no doubt Apple knows a lot about making high performance computers. It strikes me as rather impressive, actually, that in the early days of Apple building on Intel architecture that they can create computers that beat the best PC designs. No doubt better PC designs will come of this, and we will all win.

That reminds me, I need to start spec'ing out a new Dell workstation. Or maybe a new Mac.
