Apple Mail issue with Win clients

I have had this ongoing issue for a long time. I could have asked for help earlier but didn't think about it until now.

When I attach a hi-res image to an Apple Mail message to be received by my, invariably, PC clients, I often receive a message back saying they can't save the image as it is embedded. (I have also had this with some Mac users too). I didn't do that... at least not to the best of my knowledge. I usually check the Windows compatible check box but that doesn't seem to matter.

Anybody know what is going on? My work around is to create a zipped folder and attach it. That seems to work.

Hi.

If you check the 'Windows friendly attachments' checkbox, you have basically done all you can. In my experience, sometimes the combination of Mac Mail and Windows recipients just does not work. Could be Bill Gates getting his own back...

Perhaps every now and then you forget to check the friendly attachments checkbox. You can turn it on permanently by going to the Edit menu, Attachments, Always send windows friendly attachments...

If all else fails, you could try Mozilla Thunderbird Thunderbird - Reclaim your inbox as an alternative mail client on the Mac.

Mike.

It happens from time to time, and 'Send Windows-friendly attachments' doesn't seem to have any influence on it. Put your image in a ZIP archive and the problem is over.

I'm pretty sure that you can tell the recepient to right click on each picture and then save the file (although this isn't ideal!).

Edmond,

I'm told by some recipients that this hasn't worked. I have tried telling them to just drag the apparently embedded image to their desktop (now that confuses many Win users). It then renames the file as something like pic0001. So that can work but it's far from ideal.

Mike.
I know I have forgotten to check the box sometimes but even that doesn't necessarily correlate to the occasions of difficulty.

Could it be an Outlook Express thing, since that programme seems to dominate the WIN market. Maybe I should try Apple to see if they have a solution.

Wouldn't be the first time some obscure windows setting has disabled core functionality in some program or other.

The only real way to check is to get behind a PC that displays the broken behaviour and explore the options...
