MacBook Pro LED Display

My just delivered 2,4 GHz, 15.4" MacBook Pro Led display has:

1) A very small band of increased brightness at the base of the screen;

2) A tendency to change tint at a 45° viewing angle toward the greenish-yellow; this improves somewhat with profiling.

My question is : is this what I should be expecting or do I have one of the initial bad lot of screens that were quite frequently reported?

Re: MacBook Pro LED Display

This is the first model that Apple has produced with LED backlighting, so there is not a lot of reference points. There is the Rob Galbraith review of calibrating the monitor.

He concludes that the monitor color is excellent, so I would suggest that you take it back to Apple for a replacement.

Re: MacBook Pro LED Display

Thanks for your response.

It was on the basis of Galbraith's review (which I've found over the years to be very reliable and informative) that I decided to get the MacBook Pro with the LED display.

My profiling efforts have not had a particularly satisfactory result so far, leaving me with PS CS3 palettes with a bluish colorcast.

Re: MacBook Pro LED Display

I have had excellent results with Colovision's Spyder2 Pro calibrator on both my 20" iMac and 20" Apple Cinema Display on the Mac Pro.

Since you noticed a color shift problem before calibration and only a minor correction after, I still suspect a bad LCD.

Re: MacBook Pro LED Display

Thanks once again Jerry. I looked at two comparable displays at a local store and I think that this is par for the course for these LED screens. Using a somewhat different profile has brought some help for the PS palette colorcast - I hope that this is not an instance of chromatic adaptation. I think that these displays at the present time have more restricted viewing angles than earlier displays, and require getting used to. At least I hope so?

Re: MacBook Pro LED Display

Jerry you were right! I overcame my inertia and called Apple, and each time I began a sentence it was completed by the Apple Care representative who told me to have the machine exchanged saying he wouldn't keep one like it. It must be a known set of issues for which they hopefully have a solution. In any case I'll wait awhile after returning the machine to get a replacement in the hope that this will give Apple time to remedy the problem.
