G5 to Mac Pro?

Anyone out there who's upgraded from a G5 dualie to a Mac Pro? I've been using my G5 2G, DP machine for several years (2002?) and it's still going strong. Stable and reliable. However, I'm thinking enough time has elapsed since the Intel machines were introduced to make the upgrade to a Mac Pro a pretty safe bet. Plus, I wouldn't mind getting a decent speed bump.

When I went from the G4 tower to the G5 the speed increase was very noticeable. I'm wondering if the contrast between my current machine and the newer Intel boxes will be as significant. Is there anyone who might be able to share their own experience with an upgrade to one of the new MAC towers?

Thanks!
Tim

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Hey Tim, I didn't make a direct upgrade (had a G5 at my last paper and was assigned a G4 at my current paper for a couple months before getting upgraded to the Mac Pro I have now). The Mac Pro is definitely the fastest machine I've ever had, Photo Mechanic just flies through files with it. You'll notice a little improvement (startup time is way faster) but I don't think it will be as significant as going from the G4 to G5.

Personally I'd hold out a little longer. The Mac Pros haven't been updated in a almost a year and are really overdue. There is an official Apple product announcement on Tuesday, most speculation points to new iMacs, but you never know....

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Thanks Kevin, I think that's good advice. If nothing else, waiting will allow me to receive a machine with Lepeord already installed. I am looking forward to faster though.

Tim -

Wait until I buy an Intel Mac. Apple will update their line the next day. Never fails to happen.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Check this site http://mactactic.com/.

I was about to order a MacBook Pro and my son told me to check. I had to wait three weeks but got the new MacBook Pro with the new screen technology.

Now I'm very happy with the screen and the speed but will wait a while to get a MacPro, four months or so.
