Just, as a reminder: if you can, wait for the next generation. It's just around the corner.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Good reminder. However, if the present generation, as reports suggest, functions very quietly, I don't see how I would need much more processing power in the short and middle term. I guess at my age, the long term is very wishful thinking, and the power of the 2.66GHz machine is quite a bit more than I might need.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

I recently had my G4 burn up almost literally. I ended up getting a new mac pro tower dual and added 8GB of RAM. What used to take my G4 overnight or a full day, now is done in an hour of processing. I couldnt imagine how much better it runs. CS3, lightroom, Canon RAW, Safari and my slideshow software all run AT THE SAME TIME! This is handling 49GB raw files and 93MB TIF files. I dont know if the new iMac or the new OS will shake the earth enough to get me to upgrade, but I really enjoy the new machine.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

What's the rest of your configuration (video card, drives, monitor etc.)? I'm thinking I'd be better off maybe, doing exactly what you've done, especially if Mac Pro prices drop should the rumor of an updated model soon prove true.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Currently Im using a Samsung HD 24" monitor. Dual core intel Xeon Processors. NVIDIA GEForce 7300 video chipset. Syncmaster display setting at 1900x1200 32 bit color. I have an internal 250GB drive and a half terabyte LaCie external drive as well. Try to find a local apple store and go spend some time there. You get some really great support and free classes if you purchase direct from apple. My brother and fellow shooter with the same setup uses 2 Apple Cinema monitors and uses them for video editing on FinalCut Pro.
good luck
