Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

I'm right there with you waiting for the newer machine. The latest rumors are pointing to mid-November but who knows, at this point it could be MacWorld in January.

Yes, as someone pointed out, with computers there is always a newer faster machine around the corner. The problem with Apple is that they don't update their machines near as often as other PC makers. So the computer you buy today is significantly "older" than the newer model just around the corner. This is especially true in the graphics card department. The 1900XT is a decent card but is fairly dated at this point. The graphics card is the main reason I'm waiting for the updated model before buying.

Since I'll be using this computer for the next four years or so, waiting an additional six months to make sure I have the most current (at the time of purchase) options is worth the wait for me.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Yes, I agree that it's worth waiting for. I've had my current g5 for..... hmmmm a few years? I want to say 4 years, I guess that's possible. In any case, I have read complaints about the video cards in the current Mac Pros and that is also a reason to wait. Besides, it's not as if I'm suffering all that much. But a little more speed will be welcome. So new Penryn chips and video cards will make it worhwhile.

Wait, or jump (with anger and frustration).

The graphics card, by the way, is also overdue for an upgrade. And, who knows, maybe the new MacPro will have an HD burner...

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

This is quite a bit secondary to the topic but I am curious to learn how noisy (or quiet) the 2.66GHz Mac Pro is for doing standard, generally one-at-a-time, Raw conversions and PS CS3 preparation for printing (1Ds2 and, if the future bodes well, 1Ds3 files). I've been told that this model performing these tasks should be very quiet, but I'd like some independent confirmation.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

My 2.66 MacPro (12 gigs ram, two 500 GB HD, Superdrive, ATI X1900XT) is extremely quiet running Graphic Design and Photo editing software (Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium, Quark XPress, Aperture, iMovie). I do operate in a temperature controlled environment that never gets above 68 degrees. I do not play games on my Mac which tax the video card initiating higher fan speeds to cool the system.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

I drilled a hole in the wall of my office and put my G5 in the closet next door, running the cables through the hole. Now it's very quiet.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Thank you for sharing your views. I've begun looking into the 2.66GHz Mac Pro and it appears to offer very quiet operation for the tasks I have in mind (Raw conversion, tonal and color-correction in CS3). While I won't be in a temp. controlled environment, I'm hoping that this will not be too much of a problem. Thanks again.
