Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

I am thinking of doing the same with my G5. My G5, like yours, is still running great, but I use it mostly for photography, and it seems to me that Photoshop CS3 runs slower on my G5 than it does on my 24inch iMAC (with the intel chips). I know that the new CS3 was designed to run smoother with the intel machines....that alone might be enough for me to get the MAC pro, but I would wait until Leopard comes out before making the switch....

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Thanks to all for the replies. They've given me the additional info I needed to make my decision, which will be to wait at least until the last part of this year to upgrade to the Mac Pro. My CS3 software is already Universal Binary as is Quark so I should be able to keep the costs of the transfer for that component to a minimum (thanks LLoyd, for the reminder).

Of the 6 or 8 computers I've owned, the G5 has truly been the best--a real workhorse. I hope the Mac Pro turns out to be similar. It's nice to have something to look forward to.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

I posted news to the 'new iMac' thread, but it is probably more relevant here, and that is that Apple also (along with the new iMacs) launched a hardware RAID controller for the Mac Pro (unfortunately at a fairly serious price).

I am also looking to get a new mac later in the year (a 'pro' I guess) and I have been waiting for developments. My theory is that an upgrade to the mac pro might coincide with the launch of Leopard (but who knows).

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

There will always be newer and faster chips on the market, it's what keeps the manufacturers in business. An upgrade to the current Mac Pro from a G5 will show a substantial increase in performance in Universal Binary applications.

Re: G5 to Mac Pro?

Hey Mac folk,

Any word on new MacPro releases? I am going to make the leap from PC tower to MacPro this fall but thought I would hang on until the newest and greatest is released with Leopard et al before taking the plunge.

Cheers,

John
