Re: Thinking about a Mac Mini

there's a Mac Mini at the newspaper i work at, and it's nasty slow, especially when compared to the 20inch G5 iMac's we use for production.

Thanks, I wonder if that is the pre-intel model as they seem to be a lot slower than the current models.

Nope, that's the Intel model that was current as of November last year. It's on the editors work station, and he hates it with a passion.

Most of the people I know who use the Intel Macs are on the MacBook Pro, and they really like them. The MacBook (the replacement for the iBook) is supposed to be pretty good as well. The release of Adobe CS3 products will put the G5's to bed for good. It's what I've been waiting for to get a MacBook Pro.

Maybe David has some more information about the Mac Mini that this person who "hates it with a passion". i.e. What's the RAM, what's he running at the same time, what kind of jobs, hard drive usage, etc. That might explain why it wound up being "nasty slow" in that instance.

Graham - we also use them in production at my work, and for what we ask them to do, they work great. But it's not a heavy-duty workstation like the Mac Pro. It's a light to medium duty machine that is capable of running pretty much all the software that is out there as long as you don't ask it to do too much at the same time, or push it too hard with some monstrously complex Page Design or Photoshop job.

It's very comparable to a current laptop. Big jobs will bring it to it's knees. The RAM will help. As Martin said, think about what you'll be asking it to do.

Yes, I know its difficult to make any definitive assessment.

My Oh dear was more that the other comments had made me feel comfortable about the Mini, and then I had response to just knock the edge of that comfort.

I suspect I will be happy with the Mini, as I'm not expecting it to perform like a Power Mac, and assuming it convinces me to commit to using Macs, then I will happily supplement it with a Mac book Pro or Power Mac, if I am unhappy with the performance, but I doubt if my Photoshop requirements are that demanding.

Thanks again,

Graham

Re: Thinking about a Mac Mini

Just to round off this thread, I eventually went for a 15" MacBook Pro, with the 7200 HD and 4gb RAM. My Thinkpad died so I combined my desire for a Mac with the need for a replacement notebook.

I've only had it a few days so still getting to grips with differences between Wiindows and OSX, but first impression are good. Except for the delivery, the online 7-10 days became up to 23 days on the order confrimation then became up to 24 days on dispatch, but in the end took 20 days. Still seems an incredibly long delivery time.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Graham
