I am weighing the pros and cons of switching from PC to a Mac especially with the imminent release of CS3, dual core technology and my PC filling up with other applications. However, one thing has brought the change into sharp relief, a client of mine who is a web designer, wants to create instructional movies/CD's showing how to use his various web tools and needs to record whatever it is he is doing on screen directly from the screen and as smoothly as possible (not by using a video camera). I know that there are many screen recorders available for Pcs - some better than others - but what about the Mac - has anyone any experience of any?

I have found Snapz Pro X to be excellent for this purpose.
On a related note, there are an assortment of nifty utilities out there for making screen recordings more effective, such as OmniDazzle, FlySketch and Backdrop.
Thanks Martin, that does look excellent. I was sure that I'd heard someone talking about an application on a Mac which came as part of the standard software that did this sort of thing, but this some time ago.
its part of the mac's OS, hold down: apple key +shift +3.
you will get a screen capture, an image of the screen, it will be the same size as the screen, so if you need higher res use a larger monitor.
You can also press apple+shift+4 , which will give you a marquee so you can capture an area of the screen. The utility Grab has additional functionality, including the ability to delay the screen shot so you can pull down menus.
The built-in screen capture function of OSX works pretty well, but I don't think it will let you capture motion or "video". Snapz Pro X will and does a fine job of it. It also expands on your selection choices for still capture. I think it's a worthwhile investment of $69. Check it out here: Ambrosia Software, Inc. -- utilities/snapzprox
