Simple back-up?

Simple back-up? I just read John Harringtons program and my head is swimming!

I still plan to archive RAWS. CD or DVD? Purists still insist DVDs have not fully evolved yet.

For backing up my data drive (meaning my PhaseOne sessions as well)- my idea for RAID1 is out the window. Simpler the better for me. I'm going back to using OWC Mercury Elite FW400 250GB combos. RG refers to these as "terabytes on the cheap" in the seminars. Save to one, back-up to another.

Software? Some people mention DejaVue? Retrospect?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Simple back-up?

I'm accumulating lots of those OWC drives.
I have a "work drive" in my G5 for jobs in progress and a server with archive drives to store finished jobs. Every drive I use gets cloned to an OWC drive using SuperDuper . I'm always looking for a better mousetrap but this has been working very well for me so far.

Re: Simple back-up?

It's easy to get caught up in this stuff and go overboard.

Even though I own many servers with RAID, for my own desktop and image backup I just use non-RAID external firewire drives. Everyone's situation and needs are different, but this is what I do:

I use the Unix command line utility rsync (included with OS X) to nightly back up to a firewire drive; weekly to a different firewire drive; and monthly to an off-site server. Another option if you're a .Mac member is the Apple Backup application (it was rough at first but the current 3.1 version is quite useable).
