Fastest Imac G5 right now?

Can I assume that that Intel Imac G5 is running under Rosetta too? And that it would run slower than the pre-Intel Imac, with Photoshop and CaptureOne?

I need to decide between a G5DP, or an Imac G5, to run CaptureOne, tethered to a P25. Would prefer to travel with an Imac, since it's one case, but wonder if it's fast enough. Wonder how much RAM you could cram into an Imac G5?

Or, I need to decide if my current Imac G5 is faster than a new Intel Imac G5, running Rosetta.

The iMac will support 2 gigs of RAM in two slots, and a 500 gig hard drive.

Re: Fastest Imac G5 right now?

Mark,

Any non universal binary app will run under Rosetta. You will probably experience more real-world speed with the pre-Intel iMac G5 2.1GHz for Capture One, Photoshop and the like which are not UB yet. I had looked at the iMac G5 at the end of '05. The iMac G5 2.1 has 512MB of ram on board and only one open slot which can accept upto a 2GB module for 2.5GB total ram. The 2GB single ram is costing about $900 at crucial.com.

The latest Macworld issue says the last iMac G5 is very similar to the iMac Core Duo, except for processors, new ram and screen. That iMac G5 was brought out a few months before the Intel machines as an easy hardware transition. So the bus speed and DDR2 ram are faster on the iMac G5 2.1GHz than the previous iMac G5 2.0Ghz.

Re: Fastest Imac G5 right now?

From what I have read of the performance of Photoshop and other software running under Rosetta you would be better served buying a non-Intel iMac G5. Looking on Apple's online store they have refurbished iMac G5s. The specs say you can have a maximum of 2.5 gigs of RAM. If refurbished is a turn off, beat the google bushes for new non-Intel G5 iMacs.

A single processor G5 will certainly not be as fast as a dual processor. However for traveling, a G5 imac might be the best combination of portability and processing power.

Until Adobe and Phase One bring out the Universal Binary versions of their Mac software, performance hungry applications like Photoshop and Capture One will run faster on a non-Intel Mac. From what I have read on the internet, it's likely Adobe won't release an Mac-tel version of Photoshop until CS3 which may be at the end of 2006 or the Spring of 2007. I don't know what Phase One's plans are.

Re: Fastest Imac G5 right now?

I looked at my Imac; it's a 1.8gig G5, with 2gigs of RAM in it. It could not keep up with CaptureOne, and the P25. I doubt that a mild upgrade to a 2.1 would make any difference. Thank you both for your information.

Mark out of interest did you have an external drive plugged into the other FW port when you ran the test, we all know how you love to push your FW ports. I use a Aptus22 with my Imac 2ghz all the time and have seen a slow down, but maybe a shoot slower.

Re: Fastest Imac G5 right now?

I just tested the Imac against the G5DP2gig, and the G5 Tower blew it out of the water. After thirty frames, the G5 tower never slowed down, and never hesitated.

The Imac was slower response, overall, frame to frame, and then got slower after several frames.

Big big difference, experientially.

I see now why these Techs drag these G5 boxes through airports. Now you can add me to that list, too.
