Firewire card reader for 12\" PB?

OK, I have a G4 800 PB, which I sold, and I want a 12" with SD to use as a portable with a 20" CinDisp at home.
But I just realized I can't use my 32-bit Lexar PCI- slot CF card reader. Geez!
So I guess I have to use some dongle-type FW reader?
Why no PC-card slot on the 12" rev. Apple Why?
Any sugggestions from power 12" PB users greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

TIA

Re: Firewire card reader for 12\" PB?

I have the small Lexar fw reader and it works fine. I think Apple left the PC slot off the 12 incher for two reasons: 1) space and 2) the 12 inch PB is based on and shares shares a lot of the design elements of the 12 inch iBook, which also lacks a slot.

Thanks Jack, I appreciate the information.

I need small laptop — Mac only — and a 15" is too big for field work for me.

I have a G4 800 15" right now (I just sold it) and it flexes in my camera bag no matter what.

Be careful with the color, out of the 12", into the 20". I tried it on location, during a job, and found the video card in the 12" to be lacking. I can't quite put my finger on why the color on the external monitor was funky, but it was. Just check it out before you commit to it.

Re: Firewire card reader for 12\" PB?

Just today I took a 867-MHz 12" PowerBook apart to put in a 100-GB 7200-rpm drive and there's no spare room inside that unit at all. Little wonder there's no PCMCIA slot -- there just ain't space.

I'm using this machine -- which is a hand-me-down from my wife -- for field use, too. I just pack along one of those Sandisk 12-n-1 USB 2.0 card readers with the short cord and it works fine.

I can't comment much on color -- it seems fine to me but all I do on it is download and caption/keyword with Photo Mechanic. For anything else I use a color-calibrated Mac in the office.
