Keeping a powermac G5 cool...

Ok now under normal usage it works absolutely fine, rarely gets over 140 deg.
but tonight. under HEAVY HEAVY photoshop. ( IE: attempting to interpolate an image to a very large tradeshow display size - 117"x92" )

my powermac started running so hot it shut down! it got to over 165 deg.

now seeing as how these computers are liquid cooled, shouldnt there be a way to keep them cool????

this is my setup -

Powermac Dual 2.7ghz
6.5gb RAM
ATI Radeon 9650
400GB HD
23" Apple Cinema Display

now this only happened tonight so far, but it happened 3 times wheni tried to interpolate this file.

any recomendations are gladly welcomed.

thanks guys!

Off the top of my head .....

How about trying gel freezer packs near the air intake fans? If you cool the air being sucked in perhaps the overall temperature rise will be less. They are sealed, frozen and reusable.

Re: Keeping a powermac G5 cool...

is your mac standing in closed furniture or in a corner that blocks air circulation?

it will help to give it an exposed position. you could also bring it over to my house and we set it up on my balkony - it's been a cold month. :-)

if you can open the window in your room it might help as well.
you could also try to remove the metal on the sides of the tower.

last summer we were making a 24hours video documentation on the powermacs at my art school. systems are running 24/7 there. after 24 hours of heavy editing the system we used to combine all the sequences and to play it back on dv started crashing every 10 minutes or so. we needed 7 trys to get the 13 minutes film played back on dv tape without a crash.
it was a really hot weekend and the poor powermacs lived within boxes in the tables without proper ventilation...

Re: Keeping a powermac G5 cool...

i have it under my desk, but my desk is right underneath my window and i leave that window wide open and boy it gets chilly in there! so it would help if i lift it up maybe , i do have a small table near my desk i could possibly have it resting on that table. its just that thing is so damn heavy i wonder if it will support it!

so it needs to be in open air, and good circulation. ok well i will see if i can work out some kind of solution. i wish i could build a "G5 fridge" haha one of those rolling cases people use for them and have it constantly chilled.

that would be genious. i should do that!

i call dibs on the patent!

*writing poor mans patent as wek speak*
