Mac networking was supposed to be easy?

I am new to the mac world with a 15" Powerbook 1.67ghz running 10.4. I want to be able to log onto my Windows server, but there seems to be an issue with the login. I can see the windows machine in the network window of the mac, and, I can see the mac in the Network Neighborhood window of the PC. BTW, the Windows machine is running 2000 server, and I log onto it quite frequently from other windows machines. In both cases, when I try to log on to either the mac or the pc from the other computer, it will not accept my username and password. I am certain that I am using the correct admin login for both machines. The mac replys with "The alias XXX could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." The PC just asks me for the password and user name again. I have a feeling I must be missing something here, but I have spent a ton of time with this and gotten nowhere. Any suggestions?

Just in case it matters, the mac is accessing the network wirelessly. I have not tried to plug in an ethernet. Also, the mac has no problem accessing the internet over the same wireless connection.

Thanks,

Re: Mac networking was supposed to be easy?

I had some similar problems logging on to a WinXP machine - it turned out to be overzealous settings in the Win firewall that wasn't allowing ANY remote log on from other computers, even within the workgroup/LAN.

To log in to the Mac you need to ensure that Windows sharing is turned on and that the user you are trying to log in as is enabled for access - there should be an 'Enable Accounts' button in the preferences pane when you select Windows file sharing.

Is the Win (Loose?) firewall a standard feature of XP? Do you happen to remember where you found it?

Thanks, Doug

It was added in one of the XP Upgrades -- maybe SP2.

It's in the Control Panel.
