Disk Utility Error

Today I installed a new driver for an old Epson flatbed scanner. I'm running 10.3.9 on a G4 400, 1 gig of RAM. The driver is supposedly a new revision from late in '05. I also have Macaroni running.

I rebooted in command line mode and ran an fsck -f which showed an OK system.

I then rebooted and tried to run disk utility to repair permissions on the startup drive where the new software was installed.

Disk Utility stopped about 1/3 of the way in giving me the error:

"Disk Utility lost its connection with the disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility."

Attempting to quit disk utility yields an ominous message about damaging the disk if I quit, etc. I quit anyway, having just done a full external drive backup.

The system appears to run fine, apps run fine, though I haven't booted the new scanner driver.

Attempting to reboot and run disk utility yields the same error.

I'm concerned that I can't repair permissions which I do every month or two. I'm also concerned that the new driver was installed all wonky and will create problems down the road. Finally, I'm concerned about uninstalling the 1,600 files (!) that the common driver installed. It wouldn't let me do a custom install for just my scanner.

Any thoughts? I already searched Macdevcenter and apple's websites.

Re: Disk Utility Error

John,

Thanks. I recently did an I tunes update via software update and hadn't run a permissions repair since then, so that may be the issue.

Thanks for (hopefully) making my life easier.

Maybe I need to stop being cheap and get the paid support!

Re: Disk Utility Error

The Itunes .pkg's were the culprit. Removing them solved the problem.

I should have done a forum search on permissions and not disk utility as I did, which would have turned up the referenced thread for me.

At least all those words are now contained in this thread. Thanks for the help.

I also found this info on Updating The Prebinding. Scroll about halfway down the page. Seems to have speeded up the booting of and my operation of CS2 which I just installed a short time ago.
