New (almost)Tiger user

My copy of Tiger just arrived from OWC. All my machines are on OSX10.3.9 currently. I run Adobe CS, and PhaseOne CO with my Canon 1Ds. I guess if everything is moving to Intel Macs, I'd better get current and get the bugs worked out and get used to Tiger now, as I don't see software developers doing anymore improvements for those running PowerMac machines. I've all my boot drives cloned so if I mess up, I can clone back to where I am. I'm going to install it on one machine first and see how it goes. I'm going to jump right in so any tidbits to share would be great. I've done all the usual Mac maintanance stuff, repair permissions, run maintanance crons, disconnect all FW drives, etc.

John,

Seems like you've covered all of your bases. Best of luck with the upgrade. Remember when you install/ upgrade, if you do not need all of the language localizations, to do a custom install. This should free up a few gigs. The upgrade process went well for me.

Re: New (almost)Tiger user

There should be no problems. Capture One works very well (most recent), no issues with PS CS2. If you use a 32-bit Cardbus adapter with a PowerBook, you will have to update the driver (available from either Delkin or Lexar). And of course install the 10.4.4 combo update. But I'm sure you've got all these and other bases covered. Also, there were no hitches with my printer driver (Epson) should this be relevant. Actually, one should follow your example and jump in now. By the way, your machines may initially run hot and perhaps somewhat sluggishly, as there will be background indexing of your startup drive and any subsequently connected drives by Spotlight, the justly touted integrated search engine in Tiger. When its over its over, and then things run smoothly.

I highly recommend the ebook "Take Control of Upgrading to Tiger."

http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/tiger-upgrading.html

It discusses precautions to take prior to upgrading and the various upgrade methods. I read it prior to my upgrade and believe that it helped me avoid any pitfalls.

Thanks Ralph.

I did notice the indexing starting on the first machine I did.

Any way to turn off that dashboard thingy? I'm not really into that sort of thing. Does it rob me of processing power? If I drag it off the dock, does that make it quit?

Re: New (almost)Tiger user

If you’d like to disable Dashboard, for either RAM usage or other reasons, here’s how to do it. It requires a trip to the Terminal, in /Applications/Utilities, but it’s not too hard to do.

Open Terminal, and then type this command, followed by the Return key:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

This tells the system that you no longer wish to have Dashboard available. However, the Dashboard task is actually “owned” by the Dock, so to make your changes take effect, you need to restart the Dock. The easiest way to do that is to type this command into the Terminal (and press Return when done):

killall Dock

After the Dock restarts, hit F12 and you’ll see…nothing at all. If you run Activity Monitor, you also won’t find any Dashboard widgets in the list of tasks, even if you had several open when you ran the above command. Dashboard has been eliminated from your system, and won’t return until you tell it to do so. You can do just that by opening Terminal again, and typing this command:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO

Once again, you’ll have to use the killall Dock command to make the changes take effect. Once you do, though, you’ll find that Dashboard is back as usual—and any widgets you had opened on the Dashboard will still be open.

There's also a preference panel available to turn Dashboard on/off:

Re: New (almost)Tiger user

Thanks Dan- Tried the terminal commands- worked fine. I also downloaded the utility you mentioned, it mounts right on the Prefs panel, and has a button that kills the dock whenever you turn it on/off .
