Re: Options for Laptop Email, with no PCMCIA slot?

Hi All,

I contacted the folks at Elan Digital Systems and they informed me that their adapter doesn't work with Mac and they had no plans to make it happen.

The search continues...

Jeff

Re: Options for Laptop Email, with no PCMCIA slot?

i have cingular service and have used and still use their gprs and edge data (both slower than the verizon) with several phones connected to my 12" PB via bluetooth...works great.....find a phone that has bluetooth (maybe one that is not locked to verizon) and go online, look for the modem script and you should be online in no time...i have used this setup in the states and even in europe, works perfectly

Re: Options for Laptop Email, with no PCMCIA slot?

I wonder how the speed compares, in all these mobile solutions? I guess my choices now, are:

1. Verizon Broadband (expensive)

2. USB to PCMCIA adptr. (slow)

3. Verizon Treo 700 phone (with email)

Does the slow speed get frustrating? But can't imagine adding yet another plan like Broadband for the cell, at say $70 a month.

Re: Options for Laptop Email, with no PCMCIA slot?

Mark,

If you have a compatible phone then Smith Micro sells software (Quicklink Mobile) & usb cable combo that will get you online. So, it'll work on a 12" PB with no pcmcia slot.

For example, with Verizon you need a plan that has "National Access". Odds are if you have Verizon then you have this already. It means you can get online and the only cost will be minutes from your plan (no additional charges, no Treo phone needed).

Basically, all this is is a usb-to-cel phone cable. The Smith Micro software works fine. Speed is based on Verizon's Nat'l. Access. It varies up to about 200k. I've found it fine for checking e-mail via web mail (browser based) access when for some reason a hotel does not have access.

PS. I see this software was listed further up in the thread. It referenced a card, again, just wanted to point out that with the right phone and the right plan you can do it for little additional cost (only the software/cable cost).

I connect my laptop to my cellphone ( Sony Eriscsson K750i , it was other models before that )
using Blue Tooth ( shold be built in in your PB12 )
and then use WAP- GPRS that is built in my cellphone .
The speed is not so good , but I can get my email and even surf the web .
