Re: G4 Fan noise

Dennis,
Robbe was complaining that over time his computer started getting noisier. This is a seperate issue from the offer you discribe. The replacement fan kit was in response to many users (mostly soundmixers) complaining of the noise the fans were making straight out of the box not after running a while. BTW they no longer offer the kit.

Re: G4 Fan noise

You know, I really appreciate all the response on this.

What's happening is that over a period of time, which has shortened to 1-1.5 hours at present from cold power-on, the fan ramps up in speed. Once up, it never goes down until powered off If the system is put to 'sleep', when awoken the fan will ramp up from quiet to a very high speed in 10 minutes or so.

It does sound like a temperature build-up. I attacked the vents, the filter around the fan, the CPU heat sink and everything else that looked suspect with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. It may be a tad better, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I guess I'll transfer everything important to an external HD and take it over to the Apple store next week. They'll probably say it's normal!

Any other ideas, hidden passages for dust to clog, etc. I'm all ears.
