Panther Problem

Has anybody experienced this? I installed Panther on a G4 with dual 500 Mhz processors and everything seems to work fine, except for a problem I'm having with the Disk Utility. In previous versions of OS X I could erase compact flash cards with Disk Utility using the MS DOS File System option, put the card back into the camera, and fire away. But, with Panther, the cards won't format properly. No problems plugging them into a card reader, but the cameras (Nikon D1H and Kodak DCS cameras) won't recognize the formatting. I have to format in the camera. Any ideas out there??

Thanks,
H

And that's ALWAYS a good idea anyway. In fact once you are done with a shoot and have all the data off the card (and backed up), it's always a good idea to reformat before you start using that card again. Doesn't take long and really is good insurance.

Re: Panther Problem

While I'm no propeller head I understand that there is a change in the file structure with Panther. How that relates...well I'm no propeller head.

Re: Panther Problem

Interesting, I have never heard of anyone formating their cards with their Mac. I always do it in camera, since that's where it's going to be used anyway,...
I have two cameras a Fuji and a Kodak and needless to say they don't like each others version of card formatting.

Re: Panther Problem

OK....thanks guys. Formatting in-camera is fine. Just wondered why the other way wasn't working. The only time that it might be a problem is when I'm shooting beauty pageants. Usually, the girl doing my computer work cleans the card before she gives it back to me. We'll have to change that. Thanks for the replys.

Re: Panther Problem

Similar problem with external hard drives (which the CF flash card is also) I have a Maxtor 80 G external Hard Drive. Used successfully with my Power Mac G3 and OS 9.1. I have a new iMac G4 with Panther installed.
The icon of the Firewiire 3394 Maxtor shows upon the desktop. Then later (minutes, hours no special time) is disappears and a windows tells me I have removed it incorrectly and could suffer damage to it's contents. I cannot figure out why this happens. It then re-appears (extemporaneouly) and stays OK for several hours. Then the same thing happens again. So I have been ejecting it when I no longer need it. Then disconnect the power and leave the Firewire attached. When I need the HD, I turn on the power, icon appears. Use it and then eject it when I no longer need it. Annoying, but I do not get the warning anymore. I have been advised to remedy this situation by backing up the Maxtor, then go to Utilities and erase the entire disc and then re (something)to allow Panther to recognize it. This should make it better. ???????

Re: Panther Problem

You may need to install the latest firmware from the drive manufactures website. Improvements to FireWire in Panther, has caused some older drives to become problematic. I would also recommend reformatting, etc. as you mentioned.
