Down Load Time

I am mulling over the idea of getting an iBook to use with a D-30. The iBooks do not have a card slot, so here's the question. Is
there a significant difference between the down load times from a card slot and the readers that connect to the USB or
firewire ports.

Thanks again

Steve

Re: Down Load Time

Ok let see if I have this correct. When loading images via the card slot, the card shows up on the desktop as another drive, so you have instant access to them as if they were on you hard drive. But, if you are using a card reader that connects to the USB or
Firewire port you first have to copy them on to your hard drive before viewing them.

That does seem like a huge time saver.

Thanks

Steve

Steven,

Actually Steven, I really don't know how the ext. card readers work. I just remember the days of having to upload images from a camera to the computer before you could view them. That always took a long time. My assumption was that the readers work the same way, though I may be wrong.

Re: Down Load Time

Both Firewire and USB external readers mount the card on the desktop; in that regard they function the same as a PCMCIA slot.

USB readers are slower than PCMCIA while Firewire readers are actually faster than PCMCIA. However, to me, if you have a PCMCIA slot, it's not worth the little extra speed to drag around an external reader on the road.

Re: Down Load Time

I just purchased a Firewire reader for the 1 gig IBM Microdrives that I use in my D30. Man, it's so much faster than both the PCMCIA card adapter and my old USB reader. Makes a huge difference when transfering lots of images and you're on deadline. Firewire is the way to go. I've also experienced fewer conflicts on Firewire than I have with USB.

The previous poster is correct. Whether you use a PCMCIA card reader, USB card reader or a Firewire card reader, they all show up on the desktop just like a hard drive. Just be sure to put the disk away (put in the trash/remove from desktop) before ejecting the card from the reader.

Have fun!

Re: Down Load Time

Steven,

Huge difference! When loading your images via the card slot, you have immediate access to those images. The card comes on your desktop as another drive. With the combo of iView Media Pro and your card, you can access all images at once and copy them over to a folder in your computer. Since having the Powerbook, I couldn't imagine going any other way.

Re: Down Load Time

We purchased G3 Powerbooks because we needed the card slots not so much for reading cards but for the modem card used to connect to our cell phones. We also purchased firewire card readers because we found them to indeed be faster than the card slot.
