Colur management on Powerbook G3

My colours are all over the place and I am in real trouble.

I am using a D2000 with a Powerbook G3 Firewire and PS 6

Please can someone explain how to set up the colour settings, gamma and profiles etc.

This must be easier than I think but I am completley confused and lost.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Colur management on Powerbook G3

Start with ColorSync Control panel: Profiles-Generic RGB/Powerbook G3 series/Generic CMYK/Generic RGB Then go to Photoshop Prefs:RGB: Colormatch RGB/CMYK: US Web Coated(SWOP)v2/Grey: Grey Gamma 1.8/Spot: Dot gain 20%
Color Mgmt Policies RGB: Convert to working RGB/ CMYK Off/ Grey Off and ck off ask when opening. Then in General prefs Choose Color picker Adobe. This is what I use for my G3 Powerbook and Epson 1270. This may get you off to a good start. Send me a note if you have problems

Re: Colur management on Powerbook G3

For color management isn't the last machine that does the CMYK conversion the most important one to calibrate the PhotoShop color profile? I'm using a PowerBook G3 and Nikon Coolscan to bring in my images for the newspaper. The RGB, jpeg files are then saved into the to a file server where another graphics person will grab the picture file and do the final CMYK conversion and resizing for placement onto QuarkXPress. I know that other photos from the wire servcies are coming in from another machine and willl have a different color profile in the photo.
Should I be calbrating my color profile to match the last machine that does the conversion to CMYK?

And my tip would be to get the colours as near true as possible in camera, or at least at the acquire stage. Make sure that you select the appropriate white balance in the camera as you are shooting or do custom white balances. The least satisfactory option is to leave it to the auto white balance. Once you are getting your white bal;ance correct you can then start to set your monitor correctly. How much attention you pay to monitor accuracy depends on where your images are going to end up. If you are transmitting images to a paper or magazine then unless they tell you otherwise I would suggest that you limit the amount of colour correction that you do. If you are doing something else with your images then you will have to ask more detailed questions.

Re: Colur management on Powerbook G3

Yes, you should never CMYK an image unless you are the one making the seps for a specific printer/imagesetter.

If you're printing to an inkjet printer just leave at as RGB and let the printer (most often an Epson or HP) do the conversion to their inks. You should also always save a copy your images as RGB and not CMYK for yourself since mode changing will surely screw-up your image color.

As for the specifics of what color settings to use it depends on your use of the image. Make sure the RGB mode ISN'T sRGB unless you really want your photos to look like crap by limiting the colors. Use Adobe, Apple or Colormatch RGB. I'll have to look-up in my Real-World Photoshop 6 book and NAPP info to get the settings most folks would use.

Just thank goodness we have ColorSync to help out on some of this stuff.
