Black Foil

Hi all
I've just been reading about how useful something called black foil is for makeshift snoots and barn doors.
I am in the UK and can't find anything called by this name - does anyone know if it is available in the UK and if it goes by the same name or something different.
cheers
Maria

Re: Black Foil

Check a pro video store or even a theatre supply company for the black foil (and lighting filters, gaffers tape-used to hold the black foil, etc. It's used all the time in the colonies for video and cinema lighting.

Re: Black Foil

It's called Cinefoil, and you'll probably have to get it at a commercial production supply house. Very useful stuff.

Re: Black Foil

I did a Google search for "Cinefoil," and a number of hits came up, one of which was an old thread on this forum under "Lighting Techniques."

Rosco makes it in 12", 24", and 48", 25 to 50 ft. They also offer 10 ft. lengths for students, it says. Comes in a box like regular aluminum foil, apparently.

I saw hits for Calumet, Adorama, and B&H, but nothing for UK. Perhaps if you search a Google from a UK port, it will show up.

Re: Black Foil

Black cardboard, like what you would find at any craft store is pretty useful for snouts and barn doors as well. Velcro it to your flash, and if you put two pieces together with black gaffer tape, then you have a good hinged barn door.

Cinefoil is designed to handle high heat from tungsten and HMI lighting, and tends to be real over kill for strobe lighting.
