Re: Teams and Individuals: Hockey

Sorry, I've been way too busy to answer for a few days.

Chris is right, "You want to charge as much as the market will bear."

Last I checked, the normal selling price for 8 Traders in North America was in the $25 to $35. range. I'm within that range. I've changed a few things over the years and this is what I currently offer:

9 up one sided Traders on a 7.2x10" sheet for economy buyers (most popular)
9 up two sided Traders on a 7.2x10" sheet - priced at 50% higher
Lamination on either for $5. per sheet

I do all the printing and production here and these are all run very fast on templates or if the league is on a database, the names go on automatically in Express Digital Assembly. If not, click, type name, click = you're done. Not everyone has the software, but if you have the volume, it pays for itself very fast. Every trader is custom designed for each league, but that's a snap to plop in the logo and you're done. We also offer a choice of 3 Trader styles and make a major change in the least popular design each year. It works!

I started off giving 2 Traders with each higher end pack 20 years ago and within a year, most leagues were over 80% sales on Traders. The prices went up every year and now we're still over 50% trader sales.

On the other hand, I know guys in Canada that are selling lots of 24x36" posters for $140. and I've sold ONE this year at that price. Just don't know how to get this moving. When I bring the price down to $39.95 they start to sell, but that's way too low for my comfort. I am starting to get a bit of action on 10x14 posters though.

Chris, we've tried clings and i have yet to sell 1. I bought the material and it's just sitting here taking up space. Even the top pros that I spoke with say that they only sell a few. Also, we got rid of Memory Mate folders over 10 years ago. What a waste!!!! In this age of digital designs, I just give them the 8x10 straight, no folder, in a heavy weight plastic sleeve. Take a moment and count how much you spend on those mounts. Wouldn't you rather have that in your pocket?

Re: Teams and Individuals: Hockey

The cost of the folders (i use digital memory mates - the corners of an 8x10 lock in and it has the stand fold out on the back) is not much - 50c or less per.
My lab bags everything - I have to stop and put these with the envelopes and they don't fit in the envelopes so it's a PITA in that regard.

Everyone around here still uses them (or should I say a cheaper kind) so the leagues expect it. They expect to be able to display the team photo or memory mate (if you offer a team photo alone).

That's one problem with this forum. There are not enough pros shooting sports & schools on here to provide the kind of reassurances you need to feel confident in making the change. I felt the same way when I got rid of mounts years ago and I got zero phone calls from parents and lost zero business because of it. I talked to dozens of other full-time T&I shooters before I made the switch and that gave me the confidence I needed.

Everyone follows the pack in most businesses. It's the nature of keeping in your comfort zone. If you are offering a superior product and a custom designed Memory Mate for each league, a mount is going to end up in the garbage. Try pricing your Pack without a mount and add it as an option for $1. and see what happens. It's amazing how people need and expect things that are free, yet, when you charge a buck, they don't want it.

I'm still charging less than I want for my sport's work, but it's on par with other pros in my quality range and double what my competition is charging. I get roughly half the local leagues, but I couldn't handle everything anyway. That's why I like pro forums. I've been helped many times to get past the idea of needing to keep my prices and products in line with the competition. I just delivered one league that we shot exactly 2 weeks ago. The Pres. hired me on reputation alone. Even though the guy last year charged 75% less than me, no one complained. They wanted quality and they got it. The Pres. opened his team's envelope and was thrilled. That's what counts.

Just a thought. It's your business and you need to do what's best for yourself. Offer a unique product that can't be compared to the others and you'll do fine.
