For excellent digital photography flash results, investigate the Nikon CLS flash system. It's almost fool proof, in the most user friendly way, yet can be customized as needed for most situations that speedlights can handle. Here's a link to one of their most accomplished experts, Dave Black:

First of all, what the hell is a Pro Master flash? Secondly, why are you using a 5 year old Olympus camera for professional work?

Get yourself a the latest version of either the Nikon or Canon D-SLR system, and then put the matching flash system on it, and tqat should fix your problems.

Not really. Read this: Understanding Histograms

Looking at the dpreview.com E300 review, they have this to say about the histogram:

Just like the E-1 the E-300 does not have a histogram display option for record review
The advantage of digital is immediate review, and rarely missing a shot because of poor exposure. The histogram is a key part of that, and it needs to be automatically displayed after each shot. Your E300 does not do that.

If you are seriously taking weddings as a Pro photographer, heed the advice given here by working Pro's. Update your gear.

Mike, hang in there. You said you are a talented photographer, and I'm sure that that's not changed. It's just that the equipment's a lot different and the learning curve can be a bit of a challenge.

Whatever helped you succeed in the past can help you now. It sounds like you just need to wrap your head around it (digital), and you'll be just fine. I believe the key word is "patience." Oh, and definintely a better camera.

Re: Digusted with Digital Flashes and Cameras

Well Mike I'm originally from Beloit I was born there. I would go with Nikon D200 or D300. You can find a good used D200 for $800.00 to $900.00 and get a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens plus a SB-800 flash. I just bought a Nikon D200, power grip and some Kirk l brackets for $1075 shipped to me. A great camera at a great price and the best camera flash combo out there. Want something better buy a Nikon D300 or D3 if you can afford it. If you used to shoot Nikon and have any lenses left like a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 or 28-70mm f/2.8 they will also work just fine. I bought a used Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 and wow what a lens. The big draw back about the D200 or D300 is these lenses are subject to 1.5 crop factor. Just take lets say a 50mm f/1.8 Davide that in half 25 add it on, which gives you 75mm and that's all. The Canon is a 1.6 crop factor unless you go full frame like the 5D. The Nikon D3 is full frame also. Or just like shooting your old SLR. Do you know Paul Crave from Crave Studio in Beloit. He might be able to help you out too. He's a friend of mine and a great photographer.

Re: Digusted with Digital Flashes and Cameras

1. All digital camera technology is not created equal. I'll wager against anyone that modern digital technology can, in general, provide a better means for capturing wedding photos than film ever did.

2. You got a cheap Olympus camera and a flash from some other company and you expect them to work together perfectly and give you professional results? You realize top pros spend tens of thousands of dollars on brand name equipment (and Olympus is not a major player in that league). They pay this because it actually IS better.

3. It's like anything else - get to know your equipment and how to use it adeptly and it will reward you with better performance.

The hardware is just a set of tools; it's up to you to choose a good set and use it well. A good carpenter can build great things with a hammer. A layman can make a mess with that same hammer too.

As a Canon fan, I recommend you get a set of Canon equipment - a good body, some good lenses, and a top of the line Canon flash (or even several). Start over. Embrace the new technology; unlearn what you have to, learn what to do differently, and a whole new world of creativity will open up for you.
