soft/octoboxes

The lighting kit I'm considering is only a 2-light one (one light with a 24" x34" softbox and the other with an umbrella-which I don't know if it's a shootthru or not). But since I want a 3-light setup I would have to get another flash head which I would get with an octobox. (The reason I want octoboxes is that I like the shape of the specular hightlights better than the square/rectangular softboxes.)

So my question is if I exchange the existing 24x34 softbox for another octobox (to use this with the separately purchased flash head as the main and fill lights), can I use the flash head with the umbrella to light the background, or do I need something else?

Or is there something else I could use that would do double duty (i.e. light the background or as a hair light)?
