Kino lights are big florescent light fixtures that are used mainly for video production. They look just like what you'd see on the ceiling of a crappy looking 70's office building. They're really expensive because they can be synced to the frame rate of the video or film camera. A regular florescent fixture pulses, which means that 30 FPS, or 24 FPS for film, the light may be at full power or low power, which causes the light to have a distinct flicker.
Fashion photographers have used them for a flat, even lighting. I've thought about mounting a regular florescent fixture to a board, and seeing how well it work, but it seems like a lot of work. David Buzzard's Technical Blog | | Re: Kino Lights, what are they? | |

I'd be careful about using regular flourescent bulbs for photography. The light, from what I've heard, is not even across the color spectrum. They tend to have spikes in certain colors. Obviously, test. | | Re: Kino Lights, what are they? | |

One guy who uses them a lot is German photographer Martin Schoeller. I couldn't find a web page for him, but if you Google search his name, lots of work comes up. You'd be absolutely right about the light not being even across the colour spectrum on regular florescent lights.
