Re: Background support challenge

Doug, it's not the background (paper or muslin) that I'm trying to raise and lower... It's the entire system! My Bogen three-roll chain-driven system works very well for raising the paper itself, but I can't (in this space) mount it to the wall. And the ceiling is about 20' high so I can't mount it there either!

I need to get this (easily) out of the way when I'm not shooting so the gallery space isn't compromised and lower it into position when I need the photo studio.

The entire b/g system must raise and lower in this case. And once it is lowered, THEN I lower/raise the individual paper background.

Not easy to figure out a solution here.

I haven't used it in more than 10 years. PM me if interested.

The only other suggestion I have is to have someone weld a pair of brackets to the ceiling to bring the height to a usable one.

Gary, the ceiling is 20 FEET high! That's not the solution in this case.

Re: Background support challenge

Thanks Dave, but that doesn't work for me. (I've got that system by the way, and occasionally use it with muslins, but for rolls of paper it's very difficult to use and impossible with the three-roll system.)

I want to use a three paper roll system, with chains, that lets me raise/lower any of the three papers for use. But that "system" itself must raise up into the rafters when not in use and lower to about 12 feet off the ground for use. That's what I'm having a hard time figuring out.

The challenge is that my space MUST function properly as an art gallery. That's my business. Photography is only a passionate hobby for me and I can't let it get in the way of my business. Our track lighting system for the gallery doesn't allow me to use the walls for my b/g system and the ceilings are about 20' high.

It's a real challenge.

Cheers!

I don't know what the larger one is worth, but if you're using a full size roll of paper, that would probably be the way to go. Don't forget to get some sand bags to keep it all from going over.

The nice thing about this is that it comes apart into a bag that you can stash in a closet until you need it. I've seen tons of studios that use those background kits. If you're not using it as a background stand, you can use the light stands as ...light stands.

Bob, I very much doubt that extensions would make it practical to use an Autopole system with 20' ceilings.

And even if it did, it wouldn't be manageable. Heck, in my old location I had lower ceilings and used the autopoles but it was simply too difficult to set the background system (Bogen 3-roll chain-driven system) up and take it down. So once set up, it remained that way for months at a time. That won't work in my new location, unfortunately.

Darn it!
