umbrellas for hotlights...

i have umbrellas for my strobe heads, they are white photogenics. i just got some lowel total hot tungsten lights w/300w bulb, curious to know about using the umbrellas with the tungsten lights. would i need a different umbrella for the heat? thanks

I use my umbrellas with the lowel tota and have 1000 watt bulbs. Just be sure the umbrella is opened fully and keep the tota as far away from the umbrella as possible. If you smell something burning, you are too close. Some umbrellas have a black cover on the exterior that can be removed and you can light through the umbrella for a very soft look.

With softboxes you need to be careful since they're enclosed. Heat build-up and the distance from fabric to lamp can be an issue. Chimera, for example, makes a line of video softboxes expressly for hot lights.

With umbrellas, as long as you're careful during setup, you should be fine.
