Canon flash cords and connectors

Does anyone know if the Canon TTL Hot Shoe Adapter 3, Off Camera Shoe, TTL Distributor and the Connecting Cords 60 & 300 can be used with the 550EX, 580EX II? Canon states in thier literature that they cannot be used with digital cameras and my question is - has anyone tried to use these Canon cords and connectors with the Canon digital flashes? I am in the process of converting my Canon flash equipment from film to digital. Thanks.

First, I'm not familiar with those items, but I can guess that it is probable Canon state they will not work with digital cameras, because they don't have all the circuitry to use with E-TTL. The digital flashes use pre-flashes to set the exposure in E-TTL mode, and the older units probably don't have enough contacts or circuitry to take advantage of that feature. They might work for manual flash use, but one would have to try them and see.

If they're not listed specifically as compatible, they're likely not.

I know you aren't specifically asking about the Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2, but that one does work and is listed as compatible with digital equipment. Also, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 seems to work just fine. I have a 1DII and 550 EX, 580EX and 580EXII flashes and all have worked. I use it with a Custom flash bracket and it is fine. I generally shoot in manual mode, though. Hope this helps as you convert to digital...

Thanks for your input. Like you, I ended up getting the ST-E2 and I found that it works very well as long as you have the slaves in reasonable line of sight. What I do miss about the TTL flash connecting cords etc. is the flexibility of locating the slave flashes just about anywhere you want.
