Photoshop Action for Canadian Passports

I wanted to share with any Canadian who can use it, an action that I created to help with my workflow of processing Passport Images.

The action takes an image placed in a template I designed, crops it, puts a slight gray stroke around it, duplicates it, and resizes the canvas to 4"x6".

Three Comments:
1. make sure the photo goes between the "36mm layer" and the "photo goes here" layer.
2. The image must be manually resized to ensure the crown to chin of the subject fits within the parameters as set forth by Passport Canada (31-36mm), BEFORE you press PLAY on the action.
3. The slight gray stroke is for trimming purposes only.

I tried uploading the action here in PPH, but it didn't work. So if you're interested in using it, send me an email and I'll get the action to you that way.

I have included here screenshots of the template before using the action and after, the layer structure of the passport template and the passport template itself.

Perhaps it can help you.

"Fake Brides" - spotting them, actions to take

I've had two suspicious "brides" come into my place of business recently. Each took up about a good hour of our time, neither was sincere or open about who they were. One wouldn't even volunteer her last name in person or by email.

I'll describe the first one. Attractive, photogenic-looking, orderly and confident just sitting there; she was from out of town, and getting married out of town. I could hear the shutter going off each time she turned a page in my albums.

Had no idea who she was before, during, or after the consultation. My wife and I were trying not to give each other that "should we ask for HER badge number maybe?" look. As I escorted her to the door I simply asked "Where do you work?" She replied: "At the Wal-Mart photo department." Maybe that should have been my first question huh?

I'm thinking of charging consultation fees and tighter pre-qualification, but it gets to the point where you have to decide how many crocodiles you want to put in the moat around your business (and those things smell to high heaven anyway!). My wife as usual says it's a cost of doing business and you don't want to put up barriers.

Any suggestions? Responses? Recommendations for therapy or breath mints for crocodiles? One must be tidy.

*Firmware ver. 1.22 for Ricoh R8 digital camera*

Ricoh releases the second firmware update - version 1.22 - for the R8 digital camera. This update should improve the accuracy of white balance. The first firmware update, released a month ago, provided improved accuracy of exposure at continuous shooting with full-press. Ricoh releases its firmware with an unrivaled rate and I'm still puzzled whether this is a good or a bad thing, even more because firmware update can be a tricky process for the inexperienced user...

It is baffling to me how one that wishes to have a succesful photography business not enjoy sales. Yet, I run into this time and time again talking with photographers as well as other business owners. How then would one expect to be successful? It takes more than creating pretty pictures. You have to sell those pictures. And, you have to sell yourself to the client. Yet, many people are so afraid to do this. Why?

Luminous Landscape News Feed- 3 July, 2008 - Nikon Coolpix P6000 Due Next Month?

*3 July, 2008 - Nikon Coolpix P6000 Due Next Month?*

Image: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/images-84/p6000.jpg

I don't usually traffic in unsubstantiated product rumours, but since this appears real enough, and I'm not under NDA on this product, I'll take it at face value.

I've heard from a number of people in Europe over the past couple of days that Nikon will ship the *Coolpix P6000* next month. This camera is a direct competitor to *Canon's G9 (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/G9-Japan.shtml) *in the high-end digicam niche.

Specs include a 13.5 MP sensor, 28-112mm 4X zoom, VR optical image stabilization, Raw Mode, ISO to 6400, and an optical viewfinder.

Looks like Nikon has decided to challenge Canon in even the most specialized market niches. It appears as if Nikon's European subsidiaries have taken lessons in product leaking from Canon.

I'll review the P6000 when it becomes real.

WIN ANY LENS OF YOUR CHOICE – VALUED AT UP TO $2,000 (http://www.prophotohome.com/forum/../../../about/summer08-contest.shtml)

Hi folks,
I am interested in a 200-400 F4 Nikon lens. Would like one in good to excellent condition. Would prefer to purchase one from a Canadian photographer as Nikon will honor any left over warranty and they will service the lens only if it is a Canadian lens. I am based near Edmonton Alberta. You can email me at copemanphoto@shaw.ca
 Cheers, Mike.

Photoshop News Feeds- George Jardine Says Farewell to Adobe

*George Jardine Says Farewell to Adobe*

Image: http://photoshopnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/vb7j1096-edit.jpg
George Jardine, Adobe*evangelist*for Lightroom and digital photography is leaving Adobe effective the beginning of this month, July, 2008. George has posted his farewell *on his blog and can be read here (http://www.mulita.com/blog/?p=53).
This is the second time George has done time at Adobe. He had worked with Russell Brown during the 1990’s acting as*evangelist for Photoshop. He left and turned to working in video and other mediums. He came back to Adobe for the purpose of working on Shadowland (AKA Lightroom) with Mark Hamburg. You can read the PSN story on Shadowland’s development here (http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/09/the-shadowlandlightroom-development-story/).*
George will be missed but not forgotten and I suspect he’ll be around the industry working on different projects after he takes his summer vacation. I know that after our recent bike trip together he went out and bought a new K1200 GT BMW motorcycle that he’ll be touring around on. We may hook up for another trip later in the summer.
I personally would like to say a hearty thanks and congratulations to George on the work he has done and what he has brought to Adobe. Thanks George…see ya around!

*John Nack Guest-Blogs on Photoshop Insider*

Image: http://photoshopnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/vb7j5356.jpg
John Nack, the Senior Photoshop Product Manager at Adobe has been invited by Scott Kelby to post on Scott’s Photoshop-Insider (http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/) blog.
John’s post talks about the relative difficulties of determining what features and functionality to add to new versions of Photoshop. It’s a little something I know a bit about having coined the phrase; careful what you wish for, the Photoshop engineers may (or may not) give you what you said you wanted.
Check out John’s post here (http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2008/archives/1641).
