Re: Outdoor group shot at night help needed

The event can 't be previewed at the same time on another date unless there is another event at the same time/place. And the stadium is about 70 minute drive one way from me - i just don't have the time to do it, if it's even possible.

The event (reunion) is at the stadium (they do weddings and all sorts of things). I can bring any gear I want, got special access to a door, elevators, etc. The band is using the same deal to get in/out. I can come hours early too (the band is, to set up and practice). It just won't be dark. I am a full time pro with plenty of insurance and gear. Just not stilts

I will have an assistant and plan to have him hold the light(s) as needed. I have a vagabond so plug in power isn't a concern, but it's not far away. The vagabond can kick off 600ws about 200 times before it becomes an issue.

Apparently this has been done by other photgraphers... but I may suggest we do TWO shots one in the stands and one on the patio...I think I can get above the patio and shoot down at them that way...i'll have to see about it.

And yes, I am crazy. But a good kind of crazy. I can get girls to do this:
Highslide JS
Highslide JS
Yeah, that's a girl in a pig sty, with a pig, in a prom dress with a crown - and yes, she's smiling. (it helps that it's her pig I suppose)

One thought for lighting this kind of thing with one light:
With the camera on a tripod, take several exposures, moving your single light between shots to eventually cover all the required area. Make a composite in Photoshop for the final image.

Good luck. It's an interesting challenge!

You could use the "rear" mode when you take the shot.
