Vinyl Greenscreen Backdrops

Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a 3 metre vinyl greenscreen backdrop available?

I'm going through paper rolls like theres no tomorrow and they always end up torn with heels dragging through or fall to pieces if a drink is spilt!

Re: Vinyl Greenscreen Backdrops

Hey Ian,

Interesting post as I watched Keith Trainor shooting full length Chromakey demonstrations at Focus and the resulting photos made the subject look like they were just floating in space. Truly odd results.

Personally I only shoot top half or 3/4 images this way to keep things simple and use a background frpm Colourscape although I see that they have deleted from their brochure.

Failing that, try this: Interfit INT721 Masters Giant Collapsible - Chroma Green : Studio Equipment : Accessories : Buy a Interfit INT721 Masters Giant Collapsible - Chroma Green:Fotosense

I don't know about vinyl, but Botero makes their "Super Collapsible" cloth folding backgrounds in various "Chroma-Key" colors. They are about 8'x8' for their main portion, and in addition have an 8'x8' "ground cloth" extending out from the front (it emerges from a line about 1' above the floor).

They fold up into a circular package about 3' in diameter (goes into a cloth case that looks as if it should contain a very large pair of crash cymbals!).

Here's a link to the Chroma-Key green one at B&H:

Botero | #026 Super Collapsible Background - 8x16' - | SC026816

We use the "process blue" one in our studio all the time. It is very nice. Learning how to fold it up is a little like learning how to tie a knot in a cherry stem with your tongue, though!

Re: Vinyl Greenscreen Backdrops

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the link.

This product appears to be available under a miriad of different brands.

Would still preffer the vinyl if such a beast exists, so much easier to wipe clean when drinks get spilt.

Perhaps its the kind of GS jobs I attract where there always seems to be too much booze, especiall on my GS background!

Re: Vinyl Greenscreen Backdrops

Any vinyl that is the same or similar colour will work for still photos. Video is much more specific in colour than still. It's amazing how the green will vary on all of the Chromakey products

Actually the product that most Hollywood studios use is a plastic foam called Chromatte. I think it was actually invented in the UK by a BBC guy. Price is very steep. Try a Google for it.

Re: Vinyl Greenscreen Backdrops

James, the problem is that they seem to be fabric. That's the same as what we use and fabric runs into problems with small wrinkles and creases that often show through in the final print if you are critical. The other advantage of Chromatte is that it doesn't reflect back to the degree fabric does. We've tried many different mfgs of green screen material and they all have the same issues.

I would love to go with Chromatte to avoid these problems but cannot justify the high cost. If a non-reflective vinyl product was available, I'd sure give it a try. Maybe the answer is to get white vinyl and paint it.
