Transporting dye-sub media

Probably a silly question, but:

How do you transport your dye-sub media (paper & ribbon) mid-roll? Do you just pop it into a cardboard box and put it in your trunk, or do you have a special case/other novel solution?

Thanks in advance,
Derek

Re: Transporting dye-sub media

Derek,

I've always left paper and ribbon in and loaded. I suppose if I were to ship it somewhere I would leave the ribbon in and unload and secure the paper. I've been doing this with my Kodak 6800 for three years and have never had a problem.

I transport the printer in the box w/ the foam inserts that it was shipped with. It all fits nicely into my trunk. Printer supplies and consumables are packed into a separate medium rigid case.

Re: Transporting dye-sub media

You need to check what the manufacturer recommends. I have a Sony UP-DR150 which has to have the paper removed during transport to avoid damaging the head, so I keep the media wrapped in the box it came in (which is quite sturdy). I think you need to be careful where you store the media between jobs because you would have potentially more problems if it became contaminated from the environment where it was kept, so again, check what the maker recommends so if anything does go wrong it's not your fault.

Re: Transporting dye-sub media

Hi,

Always just left the media in the printers and don't even box the printers up, just make sure they can't slide or fall over whilst driving, not had a problem in 7 years.

Only pointer I'd give is that if you have stored the spare media in the cold and take it in doors to use, watch out for condensation on the paper. It all warms up quite quickly but the first few out can have an almost "water colour" effect.

Re: Transporting dye-sub media

Hi Derek
We wondered about that as is says to take out the media pack for transport - but we never have and it's always been fine. I know that technically you probably should but there is so much to pack / load/ unload/ re pack etc etc we decided to take the risk.

I use the UP-DR150 and have always transported the printer with media loaded.

Funny that Ian should warn against sliding and falling - When I changed from a marquee to a trailer I installed the printer in the trailer on top of a counter. As i had never ever towed anything more than a open trailer to the local dump i had no idea about lashing kit down in transport. the printers heavy i thought it cant go anywhere. Well it did straight off the counter and onto the newly delivered, but not yet mounted frame display. i guess the frames / glass broke it's fall, but it still fell a good few feet on to a corner.

Put it back on the counter, powered it up and it didn't miss a beat all through the event - which was a bit of a relief as it was a 3 day bank holiday weekend !!!

I swear by Sony's - always have, always will - the new up-dr200 sounds very interesting

Re: Transporting dye-sub media

Add me to the list of people who just plain leave the printer loaded. When I do swap media between 5x7 and 4x6 the unused kit is wrapped in in a plastic baggie.
