Claude, I spoke to Koolu this afternoon. Their web site is really bad & they say it will be changed shortly. There is so little information with 'guts' on it. The resoution issue is good. I was concerned that it wouldn't work at 32 bit, but they say it does. They also said I can run Windows on it if I wanted to, so I'm not sure I believe it or not. Why would I run WIN? I'm old & cranky and not as keen on Linux as other. Firefox might be the answer. They also said there are firewalls built in, so cusomers can't hack into the PC. Hmm. Still, this is a sales person I'm talking to.
I was going to order one to try out but they are backordered, so if you have on in the mail, I'll wait for you to try it. Thanks for the lead.
BTW, I had another offer to shoot a tournament in the past hour. 15 8x10 plus one 16x20 of each team, shot in 4 locations at the same time, delivered in 48 hours $115. total, taxes in per team
I replied: Is that a typo??????? Halloween prank???????

Doug, they just announce me that my 1Gb unit "without a hard drive" is B.O! I guess it is supplier issue or another model? For sure when it comes in I'll keep this forum updated. My goal with that unit is to create a "cost effective wireless slide show flat panel".We have developed our kiosk based on PXE boot + Firefox running full screen.
Firewall? Who needs that.... it is a local network after all, not an open server on the web! Once linux is setup on a system, enjoy taking pictures. I would not put windows on these unit because Ubuntu is a great community + Free + safer than Windows (for me at least . Overall I think it is a very interesting machine worth the wait. I will try to call them soon also.
How many of you are adding the Windows license cost to your actual final Kiosk cost calculation? I don't, I do not use it.

The thin client that I use is the WYSE 9235 Thin client, it has has an embeded version of Windows XP and yes Internet Explorer can be set to run in Kiosk mode. I have also mangaed to install Irfanview on it to run slideshows. It has very little storage so anything larger than Irfanview can not be installed. I run a computer with a WAMP installation and then build a website using Jalbum which the thin clients can log onto. Very light load on the processor and very quick to build new albums.

What I do not see in this thread is any mention to Express Digital Darkroom. Does anyone here use it as a KIOSK system? Does anyone here recommend it? Does it fit to a security system of allowing multiple viewers in your network without fear of vandalism?
I have been looking into Express Digital Darkroom for a little while now, but can not find the answer to my main fear. My concern is that I wish to let my customers move the mouse and look at the screen to view al of the event photos, but I don't want punks to “Format C:” on my work stations by having access to a keyboard on any of the viewing stations. This. If it would ever happen, would clearly ruin my weekend.
I am looking for a system that will allow me to show my photos to many on viewing stations without the fear of some idiot purposely vandalizing my systems with a few system commands.
I personally think that express Digital is a great software, but it doesn't act really good as a Kiosk software. In other words a customer that is facing the interface won't be able to find himself around. Also if you want to deploy on more than 1 kiosk, it starts to get more complicated. I think it is perfectly suited if you want to show picture 1 on 1 (1 customer - 1 helper) but imagine, 10 station = 10 helpers.... this is non-sense.
Don't get me wrong, it is a super software to print onsite (very fast, preset package & keys) but when it come to FAST & efficient image displaying to "newbie + impatient" customers... I would not work with it.
For your main issue (security), true, it will not be as secure as a real kiosk environnement where everything is locked and design to be self-usable.
Hope this answer your questions.

Dennis, I use ED as my main production software and have for 7+ years. I would not use it as a kiosk software. I'm not positive, but I believe that each client station would require a security dongle to run ED since it will only run in demo mode unless it sees a dongle on each computer it's used on.
We used Breeze browser on a second event and it worked very well again. When you can buy brand new laptops for $400 range, I think the way to go currently is to download the event folders to the laptops via a firewalled PC to the laptops and let them go at it. They can't get to your PC if you have a good firewall and if the laptops are set correctly, they can do very little damage.
Just my current thought. The other option is the Koolu units with an LCD.
