Basic pricing questions! HELP!!!

I live in NZ where the whole idea of event photography is just getting off the ground. Several people are starting franchise type setups, one of which I know is US based.

My question is this:

I have been asked to look at covering an event, a fairly large "Masters Games" ( you know like olympics for older people!)..but I have no idea where to start!

Do I price it like a commercial job? ie charge a day rate? Do I set a fixed price for the whole thing? I really hav no idea how to approch the job...and as I said there are very few people doing this sort of thing in NZ so no-one local I can ask!

Contact me off list if you prefer.....

Re: Basic pricing questions! HELP!!!

First off, what have you been contated to provide? Action, T&I? Every athelete, etc, etc.
Whom contacted you? The organization?

How many athletes? How many venues? How many days and hours each day? How many photographers will you need? Will you have onsite viewing? If so, how many viewing stations?

We did a 3 day international aquatics event last year (adults) and if went fairly smoothly seeing as how my other main photographer 'forgot' about it and was in LA shooting something else....but that's another story. Swimming, Diving, & Water Polo. About 1100 athletes, did a decent job, but another photographer would have been nice.

We did the job simply doing print sales. Onsite viewing and ordering as well as web sales. No fee to or from the organization.

You're really going to have to rely on your past stats from events to figure out all the logistics. More shooters can never hurt: breaks, schedule conflicts, lunch, etc.

Hope this helps a little.

John,
Get ahold of Darryn Patch in Australia. He has photographed the Masters and could probably help and/or participate.

Good Luck.
