Have you seen this?

Looks like the press doesn’t have to abide by the same rules. You can now buy any image you want from an event they photograph using their credentials. They cover the entire event and sell to anyone and none are the wiser. They sell published as well as unpublished images. What happened to the papers only using images for editorial use only?

Re: Have you seen this?

Welcome to the world of digital. And it is even larger than that . I don't know how many times I have ask a person who they are shooting for and they respond " the local newspaper" telling me I have nothing to worry about. Then the next day they have them posted on Photoreflect. They didn't even have to purchase their own equipment. I had one photographer competiting at an event where I was the exclusive photographer and he was shooting with two State college owned camera's. He worked for the college photo dept using their camera's for personal gain. Which were bought with my tax dollars.

Re: Have you seen this?

Most newspapers have always sold images to the general public. Their marketing has simply gotten a little more aggressive. What do you expect? Their photographers see event guys out there shooting and selling, they know that there's a market for the images. They constantly get phone calls from people wanting to buy pictures that run in the papers. Now they've opened it up to anything their PJ's have shot at a particular event. Although I don't like it, I can't say I blame them. Keep in mind that a PJ isn't going to cover an event as extensively as an event photographer. A PJ is usually only going to shoot until they have 2 or 3 good images, then they're off to another assignment.

The local paper I freelance for sells their photographers images and as far as I know does not compensate them at all. Something else you may be seeing in your area is front page ads...once hallowed ground. What controlls the news, the news as it happens or the advertisers? You could theoretically have your bigges ad client pull all their ads because they don't like the stories that are run on the front page along with their ads!

Re: Have you seen this?

The only thing that is disturbing is that I feel by them selling unpublished/published images without the knowledge of the participants to whomever want them is unethical as it becomes a commercial sale because it is now going to third parties and not just to the participant or family members.

When a person covers an event they will work with the organizers to let everyone there know that the images are being taken by the event photographer and that they will be able to purchase to buy them online and if you do not want your images taken let the photographer know or fill out a opt-out form so when the photographer is done with the event they remove any images with the people that do not want their image taken. The people at the vents know that the event photographer as putting the images online to sell as it is stated before the event begins.

With the press they photograph anyone and then sell the images without the people even knowing what is happening as most people think that the images will only be used for the newspaper.

I think it is really wrong the way the papers are handling this.

Re: Have you seen this?

ususally the people that buy the images (other than news wire services) are the subjects...they want a copy of the picture of them in the paper.
