Re: Events

Pete,
Most handlers and owners like the convenience of my being at a show. It takes a minimum of 2+ hours to groom a dog and on long haired dogs it can take up to 4 hrs. They look their best just before they go into the ring or when they come out of the ring. The owners need to advertize their dogs so they want them looking at their best. I dont have a web site so I cant post pictures..Ive just joined clubphoto but I havent tried to post anything up yet. When I get back home(gota go 3 weeks on the road) I'll post some images up for all to see. I've only been doing dogs for 6 yrs and Ive had maybe a hundred magazine covers from portraits Ive taken at shows. I also shoot here in my studio and I just shot my only magazine cover last week. That could tell you how much the breeders and handlers and owners like the convience of me being at the show. Shooting show dogs is much more demanding than shooting childred in my book. When someone invests over $100,000 in a dog the portraits of that dog better nock their socks off!!

Paul

Re: Events

PPayne,

We mainly do youth sports, but we have a dog (Basenji) from champion lines from a friend of ours that is a breeder/trainer. And we have thought about working a few events. What types of photos do you do for the dog show? Are they Candid Action from the judging table and trots or are you offering portrait work on site or ?

Thanks for any hints

Re: Events

Thanks for info on Dog shows and look forward to seeing some of your work. Thats alot of Mag covers, congrats! If you were shooting fashion models you would be well in the green :-)

I can imagine that the dogs are a challenge, although based on the shows we have went to these dogs are better trained and mannered, than most people require of thier childeren these days.

You are lucky that you can input to Kodak PC with a D30. This program works only with DC cameras from Kodak. The Dig science printer on a SCSI chain are a good choice, you can spool permanently and the picture goes to the next idle printer.

Cash and carry is the best. I mean selling on the Spot.

Re: Events

Norbert,

Ive been off shooting dogs for a week so sorry about replying late. The Westminster Dog show at Madison square gardens is the biggest show in the country but you'll definatly think twice about purchasing a booth space there. I think that the spaces are in the thousands of dollars and even tho dog owners spend alot of money on photographs of there animals it takes to much shooting to make back your investment. Most shows charge anywhere from $200 to $1200 for a space. I use a 10x20 foot because Im shooting 2 1/4 with 135 lens. I dont want to shoot 35mm because I sell hundreds of large prints a year. Ive got my first 20x24 off at the lab from my D30 so I'm ancious to get it back to see if it compairs to the 2 1/4.

Re: Events

Paul, thanks for the info. Please inform about the quality of the blow up from the D30. I would be very surprised if it matches the 2 1/4
