Re: Cannon 100-400 vs 300 f4 IS

I don't shoot sports but have used the 100-400 for about 7 years now. About half of my shots have been with that lens. The lens and my 1DMkII were calibrated at Canon, and I have no complaints about the sharpness, even at 400mm. No, it is not as sharp as my 500mm, but I have no problems with 24"x36" blow ups.

I might be weird, but I actually enjoy the push-pull zoom, particularly when shoting birds in flight. It is much easier to get them in the frame at 100mm than 400mm, and then zoom in rapidly. As they approach, the zoom becomes indispensable.

While I would like a faster lens, the obvious tradeoff is the lighter weight of this lens compared with, say, the 400 2.8! My other wish is that the lens would go to 70mm on the wide side. Or even 80mm. But I'm not switching to Nikon!

You would have to pry this lens out of my dead fist to get it away from me.

Re: Cannon 100-400 vs 300 f4 IS

I use a Sigma 50-500 Bigma, and was wondering if anyone had any comparisons to the 100-400. I can't say I'm unhappy with my Bigma, but I'm always looking for improvements.

Thanks for posting these Dennis. Sometimes I miss my flying, and the flyins I attended.
