Lens mount modification

I have just acquired a non-AIS Nikon lens and an AIS conversion kit, and am preparing to use it with a Nikon-EOS adapter on a 5D. I have not yet installed the AIS conversion kit, but have noticed that the flange projection is much higher than on a Nikon 17-35mm that I am using, and looks as though it will cause a problem when I mount the lens on the camera. I am relatively inexperienced in using Nikon lenses on Canon bodies, and would appreciate any comments / suggestions.

Many thanks.

Re: Lens mount modification

Someplace I've seen a list of lenses compatible with the 5D, but I can't find the link at the moment.

Perhaps you can glean some information from this page, or one of the links it references:

Ah, here's the link I was thinking of, doesn't look like it will be of any help as no Nikon lenses are listed.

Out of curiousity, which lens are you adapting?

Re: Lens mount modification

Thanks for the links, Andrew. I agree that http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/compatible.html is a very useful resource for using non-Canon lenses with EOS cameras, but it doesn't highlight issues with any Nikon lens. BTW, the lens that I am converting is an old 8mm.

In view of the risk of damaging an expensive lens, I am going to have the AIS conversion kit fitted by a local lens repairer. Apparently the only problem should be freeing the screws, which are usually glued in place. I could leave it to the repairer to decide what to do regarding the flange, but I have already spoken to him and he has not come across this problem before. I would prefer to be foreamed by someone who has.

Re: Lens mount modification

Jeb,

I actually intended to suggest that one of the several providers of Nikkor-EOS adaptors listed on the 16-9 site might have some information about the compatibility of Nikkor lenses on the 5D. Sorry that did not come across clearly.

Sounds like a very interesting project, I hope it works! Please keep us posted.

Andrew,

That's a great idea. I'll follow it up and post the results.

Can I ask you you got this conversion kit? I didn't know that they were available for individual users to purchase?

Believe it or not, I need to get two of the old style lens couplers that were used for pre-AI Nikon lenses. I have two D-series lenses that I would like to use with my Nikon F2 (yes I still shoot film ).

Thanks,

Phil Burton
