I agree with you that it's a pain not being able to try the things personally before buying. I've got a suitcase of flash diffusers that I bought without handling and now don't use. The Demb looks interesting...
That said, even though I only do weddings at gunpoint, I LOVE the RRS Wedding Bracket. It is the very best and since I would not be without the RRS camera L Plate, it's a cinch.

What are you going to do with the suitcase full of flsh diffusers?
I LOVE my Demb Flip-it flash diffuser, and I now only use my (very expensive) Custom Bracket (PJ) when I photograph the B&G going down & up the aisle (for direct flash for instant recycle). The Flip-it is superior at everything else. And NO bracket. Yea.
It took me about two shoots to learn to use the Dembe to it's full potential - yes, you must think more than with some witless Fong-dong thingie, but your images will be muchbetter. Fong has even copied the design of the Demb, it is so much better.
If you can think about how to use the Demb flip-it products to give your subjects better shapes, get it; you'll love it. You can direct the reflector to bounce off the ceiling or a wall, and vary how much direct fill you want by angling the reflector more, or less, forward, etc.
If you just want to "point-and-shoot"; stick with Fong-dong milk jug or the like. They work fine if you are up-close and inside a smaller room.
