Does the TTL Flash drive the camera or Vice-Verasa?

I recently got into a TTL Flash. ProMaster. I am a little confused by the fact I don't know what is in command. Most of my shots seem to be underexposed if I put the camera on AUTO. My third wedding was last Sunday and then I said to myself. Let's turn on the inboard flash and let the two fight about it. I seem to be getting better coverage, but not on every shot. So I would retake the shot and it seemed okay.

Later when I got back to the office, I found out that some of the shots were underexposed as expected.

So what am I doing wrong? I don't feel right about this TTL Flash. But I would like to give it another chance if I could figure out who's working for whom.

Any one with TTL experience, I need help!

Thank you.

Hi

I don't know the flash unit or what camera you are using and I never use full auto, but I'll try to help you. Does the flash unit have variable power output? I'd guess it does. If so, and you are getting under exposed images all the time, try turning the power up on the flash. The manual will tell you how to do this. As it is 3rd party equipment (not made by the same people as your camera) it is possible they just do not fully communicate and the camera sets the wrong aperture, switching to manual will get around this.

Re: Does the TTL Flash drive the camera or Vice-Verasa?

Paul, thanks for your input. The camera is the Olympus E-300 and the Flash unit is the ProMaster, 5750DX with the Olympus module. I posed this problem to ProMaster and their reply is: "The Cameras TTL flash system controls output of the flash. There have been 2 versions of the DX module for Olympus. If you have an Olympus SLR that is newer than the E1, you need to make sure that you have the #5425DX module. This code# is on the box that the module came in. (I have the newest module.)

Check to make sure that your flash +/- compensation is not set to
underexpose (It is not set to underexpose). Are you using a bounce reflector or flash diffuser and not taking into consideration the decrease in flash range? (I am not using a reflector or diffuser).

Thanks for your questions.
