Proprietary vs. After Market

Regarding Canon DSLR batteries, is it better to stay with Canon's proprietary batteries or save some shekels and get after-market ones? Are there any known issues with non-Canon batteries?

Re: Proprietary vs. After Market

After reading some of the threads, it seems the most common problem is that some after market brands do not fit properly, and either do not latch, or do not make good contact in all conditions. I suspect one has to research it to make sure. When I owned the Nikon D1 families, I tried some after market batteries with no problems. I'm sure soon I'll be investigating them for the 1Ds family.

Check out this current thread on this subject, Aftermarket 1D batteries.

This is purely anecdotal, but I've been using—without issue—a Targus battery as my second battery for my 5D since I got the camera. I can't objectively compare the relative performance of the Targus to the Canon. I get "lots" of shots off each.

Re: Proprietary vs. After Market

I have 2 Nikon batteries and two ebay cheapies that I paid less than 10 bucks each.
A buddy of mine has the same, nikons and ebay cheapies. Neither one of us has had a performance issue with them. I just grab whatever one is charged and no problems.
It doesn't matter which combo of batteries I use, with 2 in the grip and fresh charged I can shoot for all three days of a show without changing batteries. That's about 1000 shots. And they are all about 4 years old and still going.

Cheers
Chris

Try Gadget.com. They are quick and less expensive than other sites.

Why would you put a link to a site like gadget.com in here? It's nothing but a referral generator - and probably worse if you go too far into it. Sure isn't shy about pop-ups, either.

Re: Proprietary vs. After Market

Actually I don't think there is such a thing as Canon, or Nikon batteries.................... technically. I don't think either company makes their own batteries, just like Goodyear makes dozens of other branded tires. I have three Nikon branded batteries and one off brand for my D2x. Without looking I can't tell which is which.

It would be nice if we knew which company makes the batteries for each company though.
